alr so i figured i should probably just start dumping chunks of the iceberg here to have something to sift through when ppl ask about the project LMAO so. Will be working on actually filling out chars, we have a bunch more written out already,, including a bunch more on other sanctums. aside from filling in info for everyone, im gonna start posting drabbles i have to tumblr and linking to them,, in general gonna try to get at least a little caught up smhsorry if things are a lil extra messy in the meantime,,
HISTORY OF THE SANCTUMS
A significant change has been made to regulations regarding genetic testing, quietly and behind closed doors. As work on these specimens continues, they mutate a quality that cannot not be identified by modern technology: Null DNA.This trait gradually radiates a type of invisible, intangible matter that is heavily linked to emotion, which the hybrids would come to name "sensic matter / energy". As generations passed, and more researchers emotions and thought processes became scrambled from exposure to sensic material, many specimens ended up either escaping, or being left to wander out of abandoned labs.Overtime, they began gathering and creating their own societies away from humans; many years later, as more escapees are noted and rumors of monsters roaming the streets arise, such research is eventually once again limited as before. The nature of sensic material comes to light, and it's decided to leave the societies the hybrids have created alone; if the hybrids stay in a given place, sensic material manifests enough such that it's extremely unlikely a human would be able to wander to these people before being driven away by mild sensic poisoning symptoms.Many, many centuries down the line, the hybrids pioneer civilizations similar to that of humans; travel between these underground zones is a very rare occurrence given the risk of encountering humans, who are likely to have a negative shock reaction and/or become affected by sensic poisoning if they interact for any extended length of time. The few who are seen are taken similarly to how people view cryptids and other creatures from legends like the loch ness or wendigos.Hybrid DNA was designed to be versatile, and it seamlessly operates between these humanoids as it would in a pure human. Cross breeding is common to the point it's not considered a notable trait. Traits such as horns, wings, etc. are inheritable, and subject to alterations dependent on the other parent; similar to face / body structure and hair / skin / eye color in humans, they're defined with many different factors at play and generally aren’t as simple as inheriting a parent's horns.
The Four Sanctuaries
As time went on, groups would band together in the search of a stable home. These groups only grew in size, combining and continuing to expand. Leadership soon emerged, under four individuals later to be known as the Origins Quartet: Venour Rathaar, Lacerta Zalmoxus, Syrik, and Blackbird. The latter two are assumed to be codenames.
As groups formed, merged, and separated, there became four major sanctuaries as follows:
-Sanctum of Sye
-Sanctum of Venn
-Sanctum of Lasse
-Blackbird's Eye
The Sanctum of Sye
Founded by Codename Syrik. The most accommodating Sanctum; its landscape is split into 6 different frames, each with their own architecture to better fit different bodily traits such that any mix can access the same services equally. Everything is more connected, yet as a result, when something goes wrong, it affects a lot more people.Aside from being able to better accommodate different hybrids, the frames also serve different purposes to running the society. Individual frame information can be found here!Currently, Sye is essentially governed as an oligarchy; the Asdia family and its associates control all major decisions.
The Sanctum of Venn
Founded by Venour Rathaar. There is a strict Three Point system defined in its law; the guilty party of any crimes are given a set number of points, determined by the charged person's intent, and how much of a threat they are deemed from their actions.Offenders who are found to have reacted unwell, but without active intent, can be given points in tenths. (ex. Petty theft to make ends meet can result in 0.2 points.)Depending on the crime, you can get your full three points from a single act (such as murder in cold blood, found to be unprompted / unsafe to keep in society); to get one point is prison for a set number of years, usually about 3-10. Two points is a longer sentence, up to life depending on the circumstance. Three is permanent exile, or death; this is relatively rare, of course.Points can be removed depending on several factors such as time passed since the crime, or behavior since then.
The Sanctum of Lasse
Founded by Lacerta Maloxus. When groups were still converging, the largest and longest standing group resided where the Sanctum of Lasse now stands.As with the beginnings of many settlements, many strong emotions ran rampant, and a densely crowded area only amplified this; As a result, the Sensic Plane has become overloaded here, resulting in "islands" of safe zones where people live.Spending too long in this area, dubbed overtime as the Sensic Sea, (without specific technology to offset it) will result in delirium similar to that of heatstroke; this effect can linger on someone proportionate to time spent. In extreme cases, there have been severe health issues linked to sensic exposure; much is still unknown about this phenomenon: Sensic Poisoning.
Blackbird's Eye
Founded by Codename Blackbird. Often shortened to Black's Eye, the current government is in control of extremely advanced technology, especially in the field of Sensic analysis and manipulation. However, they are not eager to share their work without something equal being given back; much of their technology requires users to give personal and usage data for any given service.Most residents in Black's Eye receive weekly compensation as a result, and that will cover most living expenses. However, should anyone wish to pursue higher goals, there is a very high bar of entry to even the most menial of jobs; and even more time and effort still to be poured in before one could achieve any meaningful career.As such, many residents have either left or are trying to save enough resources to leave, have simply given up, or have other ties keeping them there. On the other hand, some will also move to the sanctum to find an easier, even if sub-optimal living.
THE FRAMES OF SYE
Cultures in the Sanctum of Sye are generally defined by frames; while frames are structured to support different hybrids with different traits (such as Seaframe supporting hybrids who cannot traverse land), individuals visit and live where they please. Seaframe has oxygen regulated air tunnels and structures to allow easy communication between terrestrial and aquatic people; Skyframe is generally the same as a modern city with tall buildings, albeit with installments such as landing platforms across different levels, and more open space buildings / much taller ceilings.There are teleporter stations that are used for public transport between the frames and different sections of them, with the exception of Sub-Terraframe and Abyss Level Seaframe due to the need to adapt to light / pressure before entering.Weather, temperature, light, wind, humidity- all environmental factors are emulated within the Sanctum, and maintained in a large building in Skyframe. On special occasions, they will create projections such as colors similar to aurora borealis, or vast depictions of stars.Seasons are essentially regulating power usage; putting forth extra heat / light for crops to grow in spring, and allowing a cooldown period after heat starts to build up; (Summer and Fall / Winter, respectively.) Summers are somewhat tame, though winters get a bit chilly. They never let it get close to water freezing temperatures however, especially with the residents of Seaframe in mind.
Terraframe
The center of government of the Sanctum, where decisions regarding major changes or additions to the society as a whole are made. From this cliff, Asdia Palace stands tall over the rest of the Sanctum (aside from upper levels of Skyframe).This frame is constructed near several mines, and a lot of weapons / armor manufacturing takes place here, along with the work of many other metalsmiths.Terraframe has two sections: The surface is simply referred to as Terraframe, or Terraframe Surface. Deep beneath it is an extensive cave network, referred to as Sub-Terraframe; it's warmer and extremely dark, made for hybrids with high photosensitivity. Elevators exist as transport between the two levels, with a light dimming exercise in between to help people adapt to the extreme light difference. There's also a cavern with a similar archipelago to the one on the 'surface' level.
Seaframe
A widely used training ground for a variety of athletic ambitions; many people, from the dancers and acrobats of Emberframe, to trainee militia, often gather here. It's also the Sanctum's main hub of historical research, housing the largest library and several museums.Seaframe is divided into three levels; Surface Level consists of the shoreline into the sea, and several large artificial islands with deep canals running throughout; The archives and library are located here.Oceanic Level is the main underwater zone, where most of Seaframe's people reside. There are different tunnels and structures that let aquatic and terrestrial people interact in these spaces.Abyss Level is submerged in darkness, a zone made for hybrids with traits of deep sea animals. There's a pressure chamber mechanism for transport in between, with a similar light dimming exercise to that of Sub-Terraframe. A mix of natural underwater ground formations and manmade construction help separate the two. Abyss Level has similar air structures to Oceanic level; there's also a pressure chamber mechanism to reach the archipelago in Sub-Terraframe.
Skyframe
The Sanctum's core for studies of technology and its integration with the arts. Skyframe engineers created and maintain the emulated sky the Sanctum sees, controlled from the tower on the highest level. Night, day, dusk and dawn; artificial light and warmth they get through the whole underground; effects like meteor showers, Aurora borealis, Solar and lunar eclipses on special occasions; all of these are controlled by the engineers in this tower.Skyframe consists of several floating platforms, with both mechanical transport and artificial wind currents to assist in travel between them. There are three leevls of Skyframe: The Lithozone, Stratozone, and Thermozone. The Thermozone is closed to the public, and only those with valid ID are permitted in the area. It floats at an altitude significantly higher than the rest of Skyframe, such that people trying to fly there could easily run out of oxygen; employees take a designated elevator.The Lithozone is at ground level; it hosts a more populated urban zone that becomes more deserted, open land similar farther it goes out towards the beaches of northern Seaframe. Much of this land is used for power generators, and isn't inhabited by anyone. The city areas of Lithozone are some of the most populated hotspots for entertainment, especially at night. It also hosts the main Trade Archipelago, being towards the geographical center of the Sanctum.The Stratozone refers to all public platforms; here, exhibitions are hosted of visual arts and creative engineering alike, and convention events are often held for creators to discuss ideas and discoveries. There's an arcade in the area that's famous for innovative and immersive games, with unique input methods for hybrids with differing traits; they often cycle in new games in direct collaboration with different artists and technicians.
Emberframe
-Stages, dancing / entertainment arts and cooking festivals
-Main land for growing crops
-Plains and plateau zones
Forestframe
-Renewable energy (ex. windmill farms)
-Large city areas
-Most non-city, non-energy related land is similar to a national park and has been formatted for people to visit
Nullframe
-Generally avoided by most people due to toxic fumes; a public notice is made of this, many homes and buisnesses here are privately owned and operated as a result. SAIA does not regulate any activity here, aside from reports such as that of violent criminal activity.
-More dangerous research is held here, by employees who are shown to have high resistance to things such as sensic radiation
HYBRID CLASSIFICATIONS
There are six main classes of Hybrids, though there is almost always intermixing.
Subclasses can be used to further define a hybrid, such as Stonekin Elementi or Lupine Therians.
Sub-Classes are ever growing, and it is not rare to see things such as "Unidentified Haptolan" or "Unknown Athrian" written in identifying documents.
Elementi
(Singular and Plural)
Generally 'Unidentified' DNA that has less traits associated with animals, and more with non-animal organisms such as plants or elements found in nature such as stone or fire. Many can be perceived similar to elemental creatures of mythology, like gargoyles, dryads, nymphs, etc. They tend to have a lifespan 2-3x the average of most other hybrids.
Haptolans
Any non-mammal, terrestrial animal mixes that can easily and naturally navigate solid ground. This includes Dragonkin, as well as lizard mixes, snakes, other reptiles, insects, amphibians, etc. Scales or chitin can form across different segments of their bodies, or take the place of their skin entirely.
Ictharians
Any animals that are sea dwelling, and often cannot walk on solid ground. This includes aquatic mammals, fish, shrimp, etc.
Athrians
Any bird mixes. This includes flightless birds like Penguins.
Therians
Any terrestrial mammal mixes.
Aberrants
Anyone possessing an excessive amount of Null DNA, such that it has a notable influence on themselves or their environment.They're usually able to actively sense and/or manipulate sensic matter in some form. A few examples include but aren't limited to voidscarring, external memory analysis, and emotion alteration.Any other DNA present seems to be the largest factor that affects the body as far as immunities, reactions, etc go, and so it's usually somewhat overlooked in medical classification and research. Null DNA will mostly affect the mind, its emotions, and its perception.Xin is the only currently living being of pure Null DNA that is known; and so, a lot of his capabilities are unknown.
Class Documentation Notation
In passing conversation, most simply say whatever their most defnining / two defining (sub)classes are.
For example, "He's a Stonekin Therian mix."
For medical or other uses where accuracy is a necessity, they are fully notated in the following format:
Mainclass 1⁺ (Subclass A) / Mainclass 2 (Subclass A / B⁻) / Mainclass 3 / etc.Written in order of most to least present,
⁺ is noted for classes that are >80% present.
⁻ is noted for classes that are <10% present.EX. An even Stonekin and Therian Hybrid that has both Vulpa and Lustra with much stronger Lustra, would be written as:
Elementii (Stonekin) / Therian (Lustra⁺ / Vulpa)Due to how intermixed Hybrid DNA is, it's usually found to be trivial to note more than 3 classes/subclasses; Oftentimes, mainclasses are skipped entirely for sake of convenience, percentage notation is omitted, etc. In most non-medical documentation, the previous example could be truncated to something similar to:Stonekin / Lustra⁺ / Vulpa

A damaged guardian plagued by guilt.
He will work himself to exhaustion before he'd let someone get hurt doing something he could have. He has a flare for theatrics, his movements fluid and confident whether it's in combat or simply pacing in thought. He gets quiet when the subject of his lineage is brought up.
SIR ARIVO AQUINO

Innocence often mistaken for ignorance.
He can perform near any given task to absolute perfection, but only when given exact instruction, including how to handle an unexpected factor if it occurs. He usually keeps some kind of fidget toy on him for when he's not occupied; this is a rare occurrence however, as he's usually busy helping with volunteer work when not working.
PIX HALEKA

A broken heart's capacity is never again the same.
He works as an informant and messenger of multiple high profiles across the sanctum, often obtaining what he wants from others with a silver tongue and a promise of a good time. Extremely capable with mental math and spatial reasoning, with an excellent memory.
RHEN MALIA SOLIS

Empathy runs as vile as any other beast, left unchecked.
He maintains a very soft, empathetic, and approachable manner as much as he can, giving himself as an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, for anyone who needs it. Despite his efforts in self care and maintenance, his scales always seem to be damaged in comparison to his fur and skin.
SERA PHEIORA

A prisoner to wandering worlds beyond perception.
His sense of direction and situational awareness are essentially non-functional, which doesn't pair well with him forgetting many things he's told time and time again. He shows exceptional talent in skill based trades, such as repairs or crafting of numerous varieties; however, his true passion lies with music.
XIN

The lost conscience in a puppet body.
His background is unknown to nearly anyone in the sanctum, and his present reputation is clouded in rumors of murder. He acknowledges these accusations, and very openly shrugs them off, even implying there may be truth in it. He tends to spend a lot of time at the arcade, where equally notorious, though much friendlier rumors are passed of his skills.
KEIRON VIRAUX

A dreamer lost to grief.
He maintains a different front for different situations, though generally seems to be quiet and timid to most. He seems to adamantly refuse talking to people long term, and isn't seen in the sanctum too often; not by people who'd recognize him, anyways. Unique hard drives are sometimes found within the sanctum, similar to ones he uses; though, all seem to be corrupted.
DAIKI ALAB

A brilliant mind left to fester in hatred.
Presumed dead after an incident with the powerplants near Nullframe, he has since been festering resentment that fueled him to live through what would be fatal injuries for most others. Once Valour's right-hand-man and a promising biotechnician within SAIA, he now continues his work on his own terms; granted, in a much less sanitary, safe, or legal environment.

Emerald eyes made cold with memories.

A harpy with a chest of stone.
Having been raised, or rather growing up away from any other people, she is easily overwhelmed by any social interaction.
Her father is a known member of the same team within the Aphosia Society that created manifestations such as Xin, who she remains extremely cautious around. Her father's library was vast, and as a result she is knowledgeable on a wide variety of subjects.

Quiet observance in an echoing mind.
Despite often being in company of people who speak highly of him, he tends to remain despondent or avoidant towards a lot of it. He acts differently when in less company, but still has a hard time truly acting "himself".

As the Head of Critical Circumstance within SAIA, (Security and Infrastructure Administration) Valour is usually first to the field for many urgent and high pressure incidents, such as extreme violence incidents or confirmed locations of illegal work. Being in a leading position in SAIA, he also helps manage major decisions regarding things like infrastructure, legal policies etc. within the Sanctum that are discussed by higher ups. While he doesn't get direct say in a lot, mainly discussing and passing on the words of others or his own, he's able to pull a few strings to do things like giving the Main Character a place to stay and keep their situation in a controlled state.He's a person who gets more anxiety over taking a break than just continuing to work himself to the bone. He considers any work that doesn't involve physically being out, such as written instruction, planning, approvals, etc. As his 'rest'. He tends to mask or deny his pain and energy deficit, to the extent he doesn't consider a lot of it to be something 'worth' paying mind to.He's renowned for being an extremely flexible person, as far as listening to what people need and working himself even more to reallocate resources and let as many people as they can reach their full potential, rather than fitting them to a mold. This is ultimately very draining on his mind, especially when he has to find a way to balance out resources in other fields. He pushes himself like this mainly due to trauma related to a close friend, Daiki Alab- who he truly believed he knew what was best for them, and didn't listen to their needs; resulting in the loss of him with a very, very bitter parting memory.When talking with others, he tends to listen more than speak unless specifically asked for input. Though with people he has a developed history with, he's considered something of a dad friend; he very much embraces this with the dad jokes he bases much of his humor off of. And while usually somewhat soft-spoken, he is able to use a much stronger, booming voice for things such as controlling a chaotic situation- also occasionally using said voice to dramatize small events in a jokingly theatrical display. Between this, and his mastery of deadpan humor, his friends can't help but wonder if he had perused a career in acting before following in the footsteps of his lineage, who are mostly in high leadership positions; he seems to not have a good relationship with them, avoiding discussion on the subject as much as possible.
